On Black Friday 13th of May, the most exciting event on Perth’s social calendar returned for it’s ninth annual installment –Royal Queensbury Championship, the ‘Fright Night’ edition, proudly presented by We Are Loans.
The night saw nearly 1300 of Perth’s well-suited and glamorously dressed flood into the Grand Ballroom at Crown Perth for annual event with a spooky twist!
And what a night it was. 22 game competitors stepped into the ring to take on the ultimate challenge, each hoping to emerge victorious after 12 weeks of gruelling training. Anyone who had glimpsed the 2016 RQCC squad training at the Hurt Locker boxer gym in Claremont knew this would be high-octane sport.
As always, the much-hyped boxer entrances were the talk of the night. And, with each boxer taking on a horror-themed fight persona, this year’s they were scary showstoppers. The likes of Psycho, Chucky and Hannibal Lecter were bought to life on the night with soundtracks, dancers and video production. Not to mention vampires and a little Rocky Horror Picture Show made this the night of nights!
But it was the eleven bouts that had the packed ballroom on its feet; each divided into three intense rounds of two minutes each and judged by officials from Boxing WA. Fight of the Night was deservedly awarded to the much-hyped battle between Justin “BIG SEXY” Simmonds and Chris “ROUGH DIAMOND” Raynor, with the gentlemen delivering an intense fight through to the final bell. Alvin Brown won The Spirit of The Event.
Channel Ten personality Tim Gossage hosted the event once again, and called the exciting live auction at the half time break, full of incredible luxury items and experiences. Some big buyers in the crowd dug deep for the charity auction and went home with some amazing luxury prizes.
The live auction also presented a wonderful opportunity from ToyBox International to help fund the Camp Quality Fun Camp or one-year placements for children in the Telethon Speech & Hearing Playgroup program. RQCC guests threw their hands up in support, eager to support Perth kids in need. The generosity of guests in attendance was incredible and together amazing funds were raised on the night.
With the event being a sell-out yet again, those who missed out on tickets were able to watch the live stream and post fight interviews thanks to broadcast sponsor Hot Copper.
An incredible night was had by all, and most importantly for a truly worthy cause – all money raised on the night went directly to children’s charity ToyBox International, which funds important grants for Australia’s sick and disadvantaged kids.
