ME Economics Unit at Whitby School

Middle Elementary students (Grades 3 and 4) at Whitby School in Greenwich, CT, learn about Economics by forming “companies” in small groups. Each company writes a business plan, designs a product to sell, takes out a loan for purchasing materials, produces the product (some using Whitby’s MakerBot 3D printers this year), packages and markets the product, and then sells the project at the “store” to other students, faculty and staff. After paying off their loan, the students donate their profits to chosen projects via Kiva.org. Throughout the process, students are writing, using math, communicating, designing, collaborating, and reflecting on their progress and results.
